It all begins with an idea.

The Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana was formed in Summer 2016 in response to Vision 2025, a 10-year plan to end homelessness in Clark and Floyd counties. The cities of Jeffersonville and New Albany both allocated an initial investment of $75,000 to the organization to begin operations in pursuit of this mission. Since inception, the organization obtained 501 (c) 3 status, hired an executive director, held regular member meetings, generated community buy-in for an emergency shelter, secured a physical office space, and sheltered 126 individuals in need during the cold winter nights.

Continually engaging with service providers and other stakeholders, the organization identifies and addresses unmet needs in the community to not only the homeless population, but also to the organizations that serve them. One unmet need identified and filled by the Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana was the White Flag emergency shelter. Beginning in December of 2016, the White Flag emergency shelter was opened in response to lack of shelter during inclement winter weather and continues the winter of 2022-2023.

With this effective process, the coalition has created multiple programs to meet the needs of the current unhoused and at-risk populous in our community.

About Us

The Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana exists to address homelessness and its causes in the community by increasing advocacy and awareness, coordinating efforts, and influencing policy decisions. We work with local government, organizations, businesses, and other volunteers to streamline services to those homeless and at-risk of homelessness. Through strong relationships with our members, we work to minimize the time someone experiences homelessness in our community.
